The filmmaker's overreliance on oddball characterizations and easy-bake kookiness often derails her seemingly loftier intentions.

Such an odd movie, though it was quite a joy. The premise was odd, the characters were odd and many plot points were odd, but I enjoyed it.

Esther Blueburger, played by brilliantly newcomer Danielle Catanzariti, is a funny Aussie character I've seen since Josie Alibrandi in Looking for Alibrandi. Keisha Castle-Hughes does a good supporting performance as Esther's new rebellious friend, I was awake she has grown as a teenage since 2002's Whale Rider.

Pretty damn good. Quirky and heart-warming, if at times a tad predictable. This film follows what could be considered a fairly worn-out general plot, however it does so in a way which is fresh enough to warrant watching.
