An incredible meditation on what makes men enemies in war and how they can overcome it - which is then completely ruined by one of the worst endings ever filmed. If Boorman's original vision was kept, this might've been perfection.

Came highly recommended (esp w/Toshiro Mifune)-even believed Leonard Malton's (r.i.p.) review that this tale of a stranded american and japanese soldier stranded on an island in the pacific would be "gripping"-as they taunt and play mind games for survival. But for the most of the movie-it was almost comically sad for what it could have been. But, THE END! THE MOST BRAVE CRITICISM OF ETHNOCENTRIC WESTERNERS EVER! And just for that-it's shelved as a favourite.

This movie stuck with me even when I saw it as a youngster. !2 or younger. Marvin and Mifune are perfect in it. A man's movie.

A really, really good film. A truly great example of almost complete visual story telling with only minimal dialogue. Sadly overlooked, and worthy of study by film students.

The joy of seeing two magnetic actors at the height of their powers square off for an hour and a half pretty much tells you all you need to know about this one. It's beautifully shot, and the decision not to subtitle Mifune is masterful, but in the end, it's all about these two men. My only complaint is that the ending is a little trite and feels like a let down to me. (I have seen the longer alternate ending.)
