Could this be the greatest directorial debut of all time? The acting and plot is incredible, the movie is basically flawless. It's right up there with Reservoir Dogs in it's respectable category.

A really brilliant debut from Paul Thomas Anderson. Both Philip Baker Hall and Gwyneth Paltrow give wonderful performances. Philip Baker Hall knows how to use the silence around him. His work is terribly honest, and very layered, and it makes for some incredibly affecting scenes. The final shot of him in the diner is hauntingly beautiful, and perfectly realized. By no means is this Anderson's best or most profound work, but it is certainly a well put together film, with a lot of stellar performances and a script that is really consistent throughout. Amazing film.

This is a an almost flawless film. PT Anderson's first work is his most pure and simple. Philip Baker Hall and John C. Reilly (two PT mainstays) are both fantastic as is Sam Jackson in a small but showy supporting role. And Gwyneth Paltrow, who is the most overrated actress in the world, actually turns in some beautifully subtle and nuanced work in this. I give all credit to PT, a true actor's director and a man who never fails to draw out vivid and truthful portrayals from his entire casts.
