Remake of 1962 film is the first Takashi Miike movie I could ever consider boring. But, this tale of events leading up to a ronin samurai's request to commit hara-kiri at a prestigious lord's castle is exactly that.

Surely Takashi Miike has to be Japan's Soderbergh, the way he works in various genres and seems to never stop making quality film. Hara-Kiri was very classical Japanese storytelling and working in a similar vein as 13 Assassins but perhaps more thoughtful & dramatic. It's also impeccably and beautiful shot, maybe a bit long, but hardly something to hold against it.

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai is more than just another bid for respectability, like "13 Assassins" -it may well be Miike's best film, a patient, ominous piece of epic storytelling that conscientiously rips the scabs off the honorable samurai mythology.

-The House of Cowards- Miike has turned over a new leaf and it seems, that he has left shock cinema behind. Instead he's been making what I would call, his mature work. Make no mistake, his old stuff will always have a place in my heart.
