Hangover Square (1945)

When composer George Harvey Bone wakes with no memory of the previous night and a bloody knife in his pocket, he worries that he has committed a crime. On the advice of Dr. Middleton, Bone agrees to relax, going to a music performance by singer Netta Longdon. Riveted by Netta, Bone agrees to write songs for her rather than his own concerto. However, Bone soon grows jealous of Netta and worries about controlling himself during his spells.

A very good, dark drama featuring a great performance by Laird Cregar. Some say this movie is a remake of "The Lodger" (also starring Cregar), but it's really just a similar concept, not a direct remake. This movie is even slightly better than "The Lodger" -- it has the same exquisite photography and top-notch direction (both films were directed by John Brahm), but I like the characterization of the villain better this time around. The score is by Bernard Herrmann, who contributes immeasurably to the overall impact of the film, especially during the final 10-minute 'concerto macabre', where Cregar finishes his concerto while the building literally burns down around him. Love the ending. Also loved the bonfire sequence -- pretty sinister fare.

A so-so premise relying on a slow burn technique to reach its 'thrilling' conclusion. There are a few choice sequences worth remembering (Guy Fawkes' Day being one of them), but for the most part, this is an unsubstantial thriller with an introverted lead that's difficult to empathize with.

good drama about a composer who has mysterious blackouts/losing time.

A mild-mannered composer in turn-of-the-century London has blackouts, during which he commits murderous acts. It's a follow-up to The Lodger -- same director, writer, producer, star and setting, and similar subject matter. But there are some differences. Laird Cregar (in his final performance before his tragic end) here is less sinister, but a more nuanced character. The tone is closer to melodrama and noir than thriller/horror. The story doesn't seem to allow for as much gloomy, gothic atmosphere, although there are some remarkably evocative sequences, particularly the Guy Fawkes bonfire scene. The main drawback is that the film is rather slow-moving, at least for the first half. But it has a lot going for it, especially Herrmann's magnificent score, which plays a crucial role to the plot. Also a fun role for Linda Darnell as the manipulative femme fatale.

A fantastic film in every way. The film follows a composer whom suffers mental lapses where he essentially murders people. He falls for a music hall performer whom uses him for his music. Things get interesting as the blackouts appear to increase. Thsis is one of the few movies I have ever seen that uses music to perfection. The ending of this film is the perfect mix of Image and Sound. Laird Cregar is so good in this film as the composer. Its kinda like he was born to play the role. I guess the film is a gothic noir of sorts. GREAT!
