The Covenant is so self-assured in its noble filmmaking values and beliefs. It makes a knowing nod between two men— and the heroically punishing sacrifices they risked for one another— one of the most moving moments on screen this year.

I have to say I was disappointed in Covenant. It played as one of those fictionalized documentaries you see on the Military Channel or A&E. Jake Gyllenhaal (does he have something wrong with his voice? He sounded all breathy) seemed to have phoned it in as did the Middle Eastern actor (Ahmed). It just seems I've seen this before and multiple times. I can appreciate the story it's telling, but I'd much rather see a documentary about this. The fictionalized account didn't really add anything. It was a competent action movie and I'm a big Guy Ritchie fan.

Ritchie’s film is less infatuated with displays of All-American bodily sacrifice than movies like Lone Survivor and 13 Hours, but it still keys into a kind of performative, manly anguish.

Full of action sequences and an incredibly moving score to pair, this could be the kind of war drama that audiences have been missing. It’s heavy on the violence and anti-war messaging, and contains a beautiful story about survival, humanity, and doing the right thing even when there are countless obstacles in the way.

The good: not a ton of unnecessary, explanatory dialog. You get the stakes and the weight of the situation(s) through common sense rather than exposition. The bond between soldiers on the team is palpable. The bad: the interpreter makes James Bond, Ethan Hunt, Bobby Lee Swagger, etc. Look like amateur gunmen. This dude has an entirely unexplained particular set of skills that dwarfs the soldiers.
