A well-written, well-paced suspenseful whodunit. Alastair Sim is excellent as the unconventional, witty and thoughtful detective. As fresh today as the day it was released.

Wonderful dry Brit sleeper with a dark sense of humor. Well shot and acted, with Sim as a standout in an eccentric performance, a good example of how a small budget and use of limited space can work for a filmmaker.

alastair sim is great in this very hitchcockian murder mystery. gilliat worked with hitch on the lady vanishes and went on to cowrite this. its funny, clever, and turns all the conventions of the genre on their head.

Sanity Assassin ! 15 Nov 2006

Alastair Sim is amazing again as the inspector.

Jay Antani 16 Dec 2006

the quintessential British murder mystery of the period.
