Gripping, A new test nuclear submarine developes problems and plunges right to the bottom. A rescue operation is mounted (againtst the clock as usual) to recover the crew alive and well

Nuclear sub collides with a ship, sinks to the bottom of the sea. Not a bad film, usually plays on some obscure movie channel late at night. It captures the tensions of the crew as they are stranded below well, although it starts to become amusing (unintentionally) when some of the crew members start to wig out. Great ending though.

It takes a special kind of effort to make such an inherently dramatic story feel like a day in the office. What specifically? Too much lighting, unconvincing acting, and way too many missed opportunities - its only plot is what it says on the box, no side plots, no twists. Even the couple intense scenes it finally gets in the end have less tension than a dinner conversation in Das Boot. I think its only saving grace is its age, predating the latter. It's watchable, but in the end, I felt nothing at all, like after a long documentary on something boring (and it's very far from a documentary).

Offering no reason to care for any of the characters in distress, Gray Lady Down makes for one dull sit.
