Gothic (1987)

Living on an estate on the shores of Lake Geneva, Lord Byron is visited by Percy and Mary Shelley. Together with Byron's lover Claire Clairmont, and aided by hallucinogenic substances, they devise an evening of ghoulish tales. However, when confronted by horrors, ostensibly of their own creation, it becomes difficult to tell apparition from reality.

No se que tiene esta pelicula que me encanta. La escenografia, la iluminacion, el argumento inspirado en la noche en que Mary Shelley ideo 'Frankenstein', esa mezcla entre lo romÃ¡ntico y lo paranormal... Genial Ken Russel.

I watched this film due to my own interest in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstien"... and was rather disappointed. The story is disjointed... and grows even more disjointed as the characters become even more frantic and opium affected. The acting was sub-par, though Gabriel Byrne was fantastic as the rather malevalent Lord Byron. Very little of the things that occured made sense to the over-all tale of the group spending a raining night telling ghost stories. The Director, Ken Russel would have you believe that under the influence of opiates, the group conjured some dark terror that drove them to a frenzy of running, screaming, and ultimately covered in mud mumbling around a skull. And I want to know what a mechanical belly dancer had to do with the whole thing...

I've never heard of this Ken Russell before it was recommended to me. It's a fictionalized account of Mary Shelley, her husband and her sister's visit with Lord Byron and Dr. Polidori and the night they summoned....something which preyed on their fears and nighmares. Four out of the five principal actors (including Gabriel Byrne and Timothy Spall) give really big, scenery chewing performances with only Natasha Richardson (playing Mary Shelley) playing a somewhat believable human character (she seems to be acting in another movie). On top of that, there are quite a bit of freaky, spooky, startling imagery but unfortunately nothing really gels together. It seems to want to be a lot of things (campy horror, black comedy, etc.) but ends up being kind of half-baked. There are some cool, interesting things in there but it's only just okay for me.

Un beau sujet gache par la realisation kitschissime de Ken Russell et une B.O. epouvantable, composee au synthe. "Gothic" raconte les folles soirees, sur les rives du Lac Leman, au debut du XIXe siecle, des ecrivains romatiques Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley et John Polidori. Au menu : spiritisme, amour libre, histoires de fantomes et de vampires, trips cauchemardesques au laudanum. C'est lors de ce sejour en Suisse que Mary Shelley, encore traumatisee par la perte d'un enfant, ecrivit "Frankenstein". Le casting est plutot bon (Gabriel Byrne en Lord Byron, Timothy Spall en Polidori), il y a quelques bonnes idees, mais c'est filme et monte grossierement, comme un mauvais telefilm fantastique des annees 80. Vraiment dommage.
