'Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' is an important film on so many levels. Not only does director Sophie Hyde tries to start a conversation about sexual desire in mature women and their reservations because of the "what would people think?" stigma; sex workers' rights, body positivity, the sadness of letting your parents down, and the guilt we tend to associate with pleasure are all tackled here with a remarkably funny and quite intelligent film. Katy Brand's solid screenplay, which has the main characters chatting in a hotel room for almost 90 minutes, is elevated by Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack's acting; both are incredibly charming in this. Do not let the "single location" premise spook you; Hyde creates a very engaging world within these four walls, and the emotions, reactions, and feelings portrayed there are very honest and powerful. P. S. If you love Alabama Shakes and Brittany Murphy, prepare for an excellent musical moment.

Excellent writing by Katy Brand leaves plenty of room for both light-hearted humour and deeply personal moments, with Thompson bringing her A-game and newcomer McCormack matching her. They’re a captivating, unlikely duo.

The most groundbreaking thing that Hyde and Brand pull off with “Leo Grande” isn’t merely an honest depiction of female sexuality — although that alone would have been enough to make their film a triumph. Rather, the duo goes further and observes an aging woman while she studiously unlearns her long-held beliefs and constraints.

Darryl McCormack begins well - his liquid eyes are impossible to dismiss - but then monotony takes over and when the writing gets overheated as well as over-the-top-phony, he does what he can with very little - Emma Thompson, for her part, deploys a wide range of line readings and remarkable nuance with a paper thin script - yet, I had to wonder why she agreed to sign on to this misadventure - has she exhausted every option except blowjobs, I had to ask myself - and more than once. Always nice to see her, but this movie is a fine argument for the need to develop worthwhile projects for women beyond the age of 20.
