A beezer of a movie. Fascinating plot; a great allegory for East German industry. Laugh out loud funny as well. A modest budget - big idea movie.

Beautiful comedy about the fall of Socialism and the re-unification of Germany. Manages to make you smile throughout most of the film but without detracting from how moving the story is. My personal favourite part had me in fits of the giggles, watching Alex's(Bruher) confused staunch socialist mother(Sass) completely unaware of the collapse of her beloved communism watching a statue of Lenin being removed through the air by helicopter. A must-see for anyone interested in the history of Germany or Socialism and generally a nice light-hearted film, has easily become one of my favourites =)

A really sweet story taking place during the decline of socialism in Germany. A young man's mother, a socialist political figure who reviews clothing, has a heart attack and goes into an 8 month coma. During this time, the Berlin Wall is torn down and East and West Germany become united, changing daily lifestyles of once socialist households. When she awakes, doctors inform her son that any shock may cause her to die so he is forced to keep her from knowing the truth about her country. The story is humorously portrayed and beautifully executed with the help of Yann Tiersen's signature music. The acting was wonderful all the way around, including an adorable toddler, and the message was one that will warm your heart. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this film, and I will the next few times I see it as well.

Hilarious yet poignant look at the unification of Germany in 1989 from the "eastern" point f view. A balance perspective is given and for once the East is not painted in a completely negative light. Thank god communism is a thing of the past but for one brief time in history there were a lot of people who believed passionately in this political regime. Entertaining & informative. well worth a look at.

End of the Cold War? What end of the Cold War? Fall of the Iron Curtain? What fall of the Iron Curtain?
