Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000)

In an alternate timeline the original Godzilla is never defeated and repeatedly reemerges to feed on Japan's energy sources. A new inter-dimensional weapon called the Dimension Tide is created with the intent of eliminating Godzilla. However, the new weapon might also serve as a gateway to something far more sinister.

Tremendous plot holes (literally, holes in the plot) and awful human drama. But then you get to the monster action and it's impossible not to enjoy it. The Body Slam, Godzilla blows up a black hole, Megagirus gets more or less eviscerated, c'mon, it's great.

Same thing... Godzilkla comes to party up in Tokyo... Japanese people freak out... try to kill him... Big alien appears... rejected superlizard doesn't like another monster trying to claim his turf... if he can't enjoy the nihtlife in Tokyo... no monster will. So there's the obligatory awesome monster smackdown.

This film lacked in just about everything from likable characters and believable plot to good old fashioned Godzilla smashing. The only thing left was laughability.

#24 - A fun slice of sci-fi action, but missing the charm of the earlier films. It's not one of the best and it's not one of the worst, but it just gets lost in the middle of a seriers this long. You can forgive low budget special effects in the 60s and 70s, but for the year 2000 this film looks very old. The close-up shots of Megaguirus look bad! I'm also not buying the "new-look" Godzilla. Okay, so it's not as big a deviation as the 1997 American version, but it looks more like the prehistoric Godzilla from "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" than the Big G we all know and love.

(#46) Well what'a'ya know ... this one actually had a little bit of plot. Not a big fan of the purple spikes on Big G though. Final grade: C
