This is a thoroughly delightful movie: it gives you the warm fuzzies one minute and reminds you of some of the harsh realities of life and society the next. The main character is an absolutely awesome and confident young lesbian lass who thinks for herself and doesn't take any shit she shouldn't. But she also tends to degrade and judge people terribly. Her flatmate and lecturer, a feminist gender studies academic with life experience and contacts, has to give her a little life lesson in a little respect. Through accepting that initial appearances are not everything, she develops a romance with a wonderful human being who she might otherwise have never known. We also see how "family values" can break up families, and how the values of the lesbian scene can exclude those who choose to dabble in the odd man or two. This would have to be my first equal favourite film of all time.

Great defiance of film form but definately not created with me in mind. It capture what I would imagine the lesbian community would consider a realistic portrayal without falling into stereotypes.

For an inexpensively-made movie, it's fabulous. The point isn't how pretty it is or the special effects- in fact, it's exactly the point that it's NOT all fancy (ie- clerks), but it's one that makes you think a bit and I see something new in it every time I watch.
