As spare as the juvenile institution in which much of it was filmed. As you watch it, you wish the film would fill in more of each girl's background.

I watched this for my sociology class it is so sad to see what these girls went through at such a young age and how some will never be able to rise out of what they were born into and yet they have such potential.

In an era of exploding documentary innovation, Girlhood simply follows unfamiliar characters down familiar paths. It's not a negligible experience, but it's not an eye-opener, either.
