This film adaptation does not take itself seriously, which is a good thing, but, on the other hand, it can come across as scattershot.

Mark Schilling 12 Jul 2017

Oguri spends much screen time with finger inserted in nostril prospecting for nose gold, one of several gross running gags.

Pat Padua 26 Aug 2018

Despite visual charm... the movie still suffers from many of the pitfalls of a big-budget American superhero joint: self-conscious in-jokes, bloated runtime and bad CGI.

A film that earnestly attempts to stay true to its source material. And when your source material is "Gin Tama", one of the most eccentrically creative and original manga/animes in Japanese history-- it works out very well. The film is both comedically excellent and visually stunning. Highly recommended for fans of sci-fi, action, anime, futurism, and comedic timing that transcends international sensibilities.

James Marsh 14 Aug 2017

While this chaotic mash-up of sci-fi and period drama aesthetics triggers a relentless sugar rush of visual stimuli, Gintama proves an exhausting and alienating experience for the uninitiated.
