One of the best examples of the drastic disconnect between what a film is attempting to convey and what it actually manages... an essential characteristic of B-Films. There is supposed to be something of earth-shattering significance occurring, but the most people can express is mild concern... at best. The main joy that can be extracted from this film lies in that fundamental flaw... as well as one of the most absurd monster-designs of the 1950's. Still, "It Conquered the World" isn't bad enough to be utterly fun, yet still seems "serious" enough, in its ham-fisted but depressing defense of humankind, to be considered as an actual sci-fi movie rather than a B-Film. As such, it is best saved for a time when you seriously have nothing else to watch.

Ah, the days in which men zipped around the countryside in old cars on seemingly ineffectual missions and fought off alien intruders while wearing unscathed business suits, all while willingly being swept up into the Cold War fears as easily as they sweep their wives up into their arms. The movie holds some strong moments, some surprising things for an American B-film of the mid 1950s, including a woman directly attacking the alien while telling her she will see it in hell, allusions to rape, and a man set on fire. Despite these moments and some cool looking control creatures that look like manta rays, the movie falls into the trap of being yet another jaded, fearful existential Cold War allegory.

MST3K version. Spoilers follow, as if you care. This film is just bizarre. The monster is Lovecraftian in its strangness (where do those bat things come from?), and with an actual budget for effects it might have been terrifying, but as it is it is just goofy. Lee Van Cleef is as wooden as a sequoia tree as an insane scientist; it just seems weird to see him outside of a spaghetti western. Beverly Garland can actually act, its too bad she is given such horrible dialogue. Peter Graves is just Peter Graves; he murders his mind-controlled wife with all the emotional range of a sea cucumber. The MST3K version, however, is absolutely hilarious, not only because of the humour during in the movie, but because it is preceded by a short film called "Snow Thrills" where the riffing had my sides hurting with laughter.
