Ghosts (2006)

When a young girl, Ai Qin, pays $25,000 to be smuggled into the UK in order to support her family back in China, she becomes another one of 3 million migrant workers that have become the bedrock of our economy. Forced to live with eleven other Chinese people in a two bedroom house, they work in factories preparing food for British supermarkets. Risking their lives for pennies these unprotected workers end up cockling in Morcombe Bay at night.

The most harrowing and distressing film I have ever seen. I really don't know how to rate this....it has left its mark on me....but I wouldn't want to ever watch it again.

It has its weak points as drama - some stilted acting, especially - but when the topic itself is so in need of exposure, much can be forgiven in favour of the film's social and political importance. And important it certainly is.

Tragic! It brought tears to my eyes when she said goodbye to her mum. It is sad to accept it is the story of modern world set in the UK.

This is a difficult film to watch but it's the sort of film people should watch. Especially people who complain about immigrant labour, or refuse to acknowledge the hidden costs that accompany the cheap food in UK supermarkets. Sympathetically filmed yet still portraying the flaws of some of the Chinese workers, the toughest part of watching this film is actually sticking it in the DVD player - but it's definitely worth it.

Bookended by the terrible tragedy that befell Ai Qin and her friends, this is raw, heartfelt stuff - and enough to make you choke on your salad.
