Most of the characters are seen drinking and Matt Dillon is constantly piss-drunk. This is the longest alcohol commercial I've ever seen.

Strangely Humorous in the weirdest ways. Everyone is good in this dark comedy especially Matt Dillon who continues to suprise me.

If you are going to try, go all the way. Otherwise don't even start. This could mean losing girl-friends, wives, relatives, jobs, maybe your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days, it could mean freezing on a park bench, it could mean jail, it could mean derision, it could mean mockery, isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And you'll do it, despite rejection, and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you are going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You'll be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It is the only good fight there is.

Shunned by academic types and looked down on by polite society - Charles Bukowski is a writer you either love or hate. Being a young and easilly impressed guy I love ol' Hank (Someone actually told me once that Bukowski only appeals to the young and eassily impressed, such elitist bullshit coming from someone who thinks JD Salinger is as edgy as it get's). Bukowski is hugly popular in parts of Europe, and it comes as no suprise that someone like Norwegian director Bent Hamer would be the one to direct this movie. This is not a page by page adaptation, and it sereves the movie well. I prefer Matt Dillon's take on Henry Chinaski to Mickey Rourke's humpback loudmouth approach in Barbet Schroeder 1987 movie "Barfly". Dillon is calmer, more brooding and I think he is perfect for the part. I'm not sure what people unfamiliar with the writings of Charles Bukowski will think about this movie. But who cares? It's not for them anyway.
