Jeremy Podeswa excedes expectations with this poetic, moving piece about losses of the greatest kind. Jakob (Stephen Dillane) is haunted by his orphaned childhood during WWII. Through his journey of love, loss, and grief he finally finds redemption through his surrender.

The story follows the survival of a young boy to adulthood trying to find the missing pieces of a life lived with images of dead family members in his mind. While promoted as a Holocaust film, it is far more than that standard fare. This film is accessible, letting us appreciate a life's journey in every detail. When the main character discovers his time was spent chasing ghosts and not dreams, he is redeemed and set free, giving us pause about our own journeys. This is a hopeful film about the victims of all wars, from Palestine to Bosnia and Chechnya. Based on a novel, the screenplay unfolds with a deft touch, giving us equal measures of sensuality, joy, tears and hope.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Not a wasted moment in this brilliant story of love and sacrifice. Can't wait to get the dvd and watch it again! It is a touching story of an emotionally damaged child who remains tortured into his adulthood. The great love story here is between a boy who witnessed the murder and rape of his family, and the man who saved him and became his surrogate "everything" until his dying moment. The beautiful scenery in Greece is a highlight as are the supporting players. Lovingly crafted, acted and directed this is a gem.

I'm a bit reticent to rate this so soon after seeing it because I think parts of this film will stick with me. The film's scenes are well crafted with stunning cinematography by Greg Middleton. Unfortunately the movie gets bogged down in its own self importance while tracking the inner emotional journeys of its characters. Stephen Dillane does an exceptional job but his character's journey in this story seems to be one of just going where events take him. He doesn't drive anything forward and really doesn't do anything that makes us root for him except suffer through childhood trauma and spend the rest of the film walking around in depression (until the end.) The structure seems to work well and is more accomplished than Podeswa's previous film although many of the same themes are evident in this picture. At the end of the day, this film moved me and you can't ask for more than that...except to be entertained from beginning to end and it falls a bit short of the mark in that respect.
