From Afar, in any case, is built on reticence.

Mike D'Angelo 06 Jun 2016

From Afar plays like a typical first feature, with ambition outstripping execution by a hefty margin.

Demetrios Matheou 30 Jun 2016

From Afar is an intelligent, daring, brilliantly constructed and acted film, announcing yet another Latin director who understands the virtue of restraint.

David Nusair 05 Jun 2016

A well conceived and executed character study that fares better than most similarly-themed efforts.

An older closeted gay man and the unusual/dangerous relationship he develops with one of the street boys he becomes obsessed with - this has potential to be an interesting piece of drama and it must have been for the judges in the Venice Film Festival to give it their top prize; but for me, the film is slow, disjointed and incoherent with an ending that is both frustrating and baffling. Is the film trying to say that money can buy you love? Or is it a statement that persistency and madness will eventually prevail? It is the nonsensical ideologies behind the film that I ultimately find most disappointing.
