Terrifically fun second film written and directed by Billy Wilder. Wilder quickly established himself as a versatile writer/director by following up his successful comedy "The Major and the Minor" with a tight, suspenseful WWII thriller about a lone allied soldier who discovers five secret caches of German supplies scattered across the county to conquer Egypt. Erich von Stroheim plays Field Marshal Rommel and is a terrific villain for the film. For a director who has several undisputed film classics, this one is not in his top tier of films, but Wilder's bar is significantly higher than most filmmakers and this film certainly an above average wartime thriller. Well worth watching!

See Von Stroheim playing Rommel and die. The German genius must have been secretly delighted to hear about the break out of WWII as he could once more be "the man you'll love to hate". The rest of the film is rather an uninteresting studio B despite a few good scenes by director Billy Wilder who may not have been quite used to Hollywood yet.

Literally in the middle of the Sahara Desert a small but desperate drama unfolds during the early days of World War 2: the British are being beaten back by the incomparable Desert Fox, Rommel (von Stroheim, in his very element!) and it looks as if they'll lose Africa altogether. A lone British soldier, delirious with heat exhaustion, beaten in battle, wanders right into the very path of the German war machine. What happens next is expertly handled by Wilder in this forgotten wartime tale of suspense and intrigue. The scene with Anne Baxter and von Stroheim alone in his bedroom is nearly worth the price of admission by itself.

Wilder's work is known for its bitter cynicism and able balancing of absurdity with dead seriousness, but this film, while enjoyable, shows an uncertainty of tone.
