While the filmed stage performances are among the pic’s most galvanizing sequences, their inclusion underscores how flat Gibney’s combination of archival footage and talking-head interviews otherwise plays.

I was intrigued by the story of Fela but also by hearing the story through the words of people who were around him or influenced by him. This a great doc for any fans of music docs and especially fans of Fela Kuti & Afrobeat music. I especially like the interview footage with Fela's son, Seun Kuti, who has gained attention on his own recently with his latest album.

Ultimately, Finding Fela loses its narrative backbone when it can no longer rely on gifted footage and must focus on the actual man.

It's a film that's determined to demystify an enigma, but the sobering reality is that the most enlightening way into the mind of this artist is doubtlessly to listen to his records.

Kelly Vance 19 Aug 2014

Fills in the considerable gaps in our knowledge with a zesty, rough-edged style.
