The movie is utter nonsense and full of puns but I think that is suppose to be the point. It is revered by swing dancing communities for the music and the dance routine by Whitey's Lindyhoppers.

Wow. This is, without a doubt, the craziest slapstick/ musical I've ever seen. I am not sure I can accurately describe its tone. It plays a bit like the Marx Brothers crossed with Preston Sturges if both were on speed and hallucinogens. Or something like that. I especially love the densely layered self-referential jokes characters make about the film we are watching. This really needs to be seen. It's a genuine oddity.

Pretty psychotic in the "what were they thinking?" vein. Loosely held together slapstick, oddball comedians, surreal throwaways, and musical numbers. Just when you think it is waning, something bizarre happens. The Broadway show ran for 1400 performances, but the majority of these performers are long since forgotten.

A surreal, absurdly hilarious and whimsical musical, it's a self-reflexive film-within-a-film, as well as a film-within-a-cinema theatre, that literally breaks the fourth wall with ease. Screwball comedies and musicals have never been this fun. Who cares about the plot? The plot was just an excuse to experiment with special effects for the laughs of it as well as to make catchy musical numbers. It's something I can watch over and over again but still find something new in every viewing.

Sometimes funny, often clever - and always really, really irritating. Wanted to love it, barely like it (the rating is out of respect for what the makers were trying to do). Sorry.
