Brilliantly written script. Fascinating story that is more about love and sacrifice than war.

Great People's Cinema from Russia. Feels a bit idealistic and propagandistic in places, but also affecting and humanistic as we get to see the best and worst of what peole do to people in war. Excellent how the faces of soldiers returning from teh front tell the story of what has happened to them without needing words Standout naturalistic performance of strength and honour from the lead character. Similalrly memorable sequence when the band turn up to entertain the soldiers"What's you name?", "Everone's got the same name at the front, "Soldier"'

This movie is great! it shows the lengths in which a father will go to see his son. The charcter of the Georgian peasant father is so easy to get attached to. The film dose a good job in portraying the feelings of the peasant farmer which seem strange to everyone else in company.

Top class 1960s Soviet film about ww2: full of russian humour and Soviet jingoism about "the Great Patroitic war". The tale is about a georgian peasant who goes off to find his son and ends up fighting in the Soviet army.

I'd never thought that I'd say this but this a beautiful war film and I don't mean its antiwar message but its stunnig battle scenes.
