Angelopoulos demonstrates a complete mastery of spatial geography and composition, as he seamlessly shifts between the past and present in astounding single-take scenes. The lyrical style and a mature approach to death and the passage of time transform the narrative into a cinematic elegy.

Other than The Suspended Step of The Stork, this may be the most effective of Angelopoulos's "non-epic" films. I think it does an amazing job of melding personal psychology with national and historical concerns, which isn't something Angelopoulos always does well in his smaller films. This also has some of his best long-takes and, even on repeat viewing, I find it to be very moving.

A masterpiece from greek director Theo Angelopoulos. It was awarded unanimously with the Golden Palm at 1998 Cannes Film Festival and also with the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.
