Edge of Darkness (1943)

The film pivots around the local Norwegian doctor and his family. The doctor's wife (Ruth Gordon) wants to hold on to the pretence of gracious living and ignore their German occupiers. The doctor, Martin Stensgard (Walter Huston), would also prefer to stay neutral, but is torn. His brother-in-law, the wealthy owner of the local fish cannery, collaborates with the Nazis. The doctor's daughter, Karen (Ann Sheridan), is involved with the resistance and with its leader Gunnar Brogge (Errol Flynn). The doctor's son has just returned to town, having been sent down from the university, and is soon influenced by his Nazi-sympathizer uncle. Captain Koenig (Helmut Dantine), the young German commandant of the occupying garrison, whose fanatic determination to do everything by the book and spoutings about the invincibility of the Reich hides a growing fear of a local uprising.

As a person Mel Gibson seems to be a total *ssh*le but as an actor, and director he is really freaking good!

A thoughtful and harrowing drama about the lengths people will go to survive - and the changes of heart that one person undergoes to help them.

"Anyone who looks at the rest of this is gonna see that something happened, but no one's gonna be able to figure it out" "Make it so convoluted that anyone can have a theory but no one's got the facts" William Monahan, Andrew Bovell or whoever wrote these lines into the script, truly understands that this is how influential people can get away with crime and corruption in real life - By turning it into something that sounds like a far-fetched conspiracy and make the accuser look paranoid or insane. Guess what... it really does happen, though not usually with so much violence and bloodshed. For this concept alone, I give this movie 5 stars.

Wow... This movie really impressed me. Mel Gibson was terrific. The story was well written. The pacing was great; to be almost 2 hours long, it didn't seem to drag at all. It had the right about of shocking moments. I just can't think of anything wrong with this movie.
