Duelist (2005)

Detective Nam-soon goes undercover with her partner Detective Ahn to investigate the counterfeit money. She discovers that one loyal henchman, Sad Eyes, a beautiful swordsman with a pale, blank face, is related to the truth. omg, don't even get me started in how much i loved it!!

Again I will conceede that this is perhaps not the best film ever made ... but for pure visual splendour one would be hard-pressed to find a better. Others, who have watched Hyeongsa with me have been slightly put off by the mix of styles - from the heavily and elegantly chereographed fight/love scenes between Kang and Ha to the chase scenes done in slo-mo to the tune of Carmen Toreodor then straight to scenes reminiscent of the Keystone Cops. But me? I liked it. I felt it worked. And while the film MAY (not that I am admitting to ANYTHING) be a little thin (even a little mystifying) on plot - its beauty, for me, more than makes up for it. That scene when he jumps up, sword in hand and framed by the moon .... sigh. Love it.

Not the best film, but I still liked it. There is a beautiful artistry in the way that some scenes were filmed.

The festival is over now. There was closing gala yesterday and volunteer gala on sunday and I think that's all of it. I honestly didn't do that much of work but got all the perks like going to all the galas and eating the food! I didn't really see lots of movies due to my laziness and lack of funds for transportation. Maybe next year if I live closer to downtown, i'll volunteer again and watch tons of movies I should write the reviews for the movies I've seen but i don't have time right now. maybe later? The movie [i]Child[/i] won Palm d'Or at Cannes so I was really excited to see the movie.

An un-even mix of comedy, love story and drama. Let's start with the story. It's toss. At times it made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Dong-won Kang is awful as 'Sad eyes'. Lacking almost everything that a lead actor needs. No emotion! I guess it's not his fault that he only has about 10 lines in the whole movie though, so i'll let him off for that, but still. The film isn't without it strong points. For a start Ji-won Ha gives a great performance. Her comedic facial expressions are a joy to watch! She essentially saves the film by herself. The stunning soundtrack is an other strong point. Beautifully capturing the imagery being shown on the screen. Speaking of which. This film has some of the most extraordinary and beauitful imagery i'v ever seen. I can't even begin to describe some of the visual flairs you'll see when watching this. The film isn't a disaster, but it IS a waste of what could of been something truly special. A visual treat with a soundtrack to match, but that's it...shame really.
