The good stuff: Costumes Architecture and engineering (sets and ships) Tools and props The acting's not bad, but the actors don't have much to work with. The battle was somewhat strategically and tactically interesting, but not very well explained or communicated, so it was difficult to maintain interest. And there was no more audience investment in the stakes than there would be in watching a game of Risk. It's a lazy movie, relying on generically dramatic music and generically dramatic cinematography. But those elements just don't work all on their own, if storytelling hasn't given us a reason to care about the characters or have any emotional investment in the battle. Perhaps a bit more interesting if you're already familiar with the specifics of this battle, but, really, just the worst sort of spectacle-oriented movie-making that doesn't respect the audience enough to do the hard work of creating a compelling narrative.

Fantastic movie! I went to see it at my local korean cinema best part was that it had english subtitles. Choi Min-sik gives an amazing performance as Admiral Yi Sun-Shin, the the greatest naval admiral in history. The pacing of the film was great with enough things going on to keep my attention the whole time. I recommend reading about Yi Sun-Shin before watching the movie since it'll help you keep up. The film assumes you know who he is already and what a turtle ship is... look up turtle ship too while you're at it.

Probably the most realistic naval battle movie of the century. And it really happened although few details such as sniper on Japan side was director's imagination. Over all, a must see movie of the year.

The Admiral helped by strong performance from Choi Min Sik, the rest of it just a common asian war we've seen before. It started fast with lacks of character development and focusing on the Admiral itself. Like other war movie, it told all about the tactics. Feel too much bored scene to get through. Fortunately it all paid by superb war action and unbelievable strategy to fight although sometimes it seem too silly.
