Why Bruno Ganz wasn't nominated for Best Actor for his immaculate portrayal of History's most evil person is beyond me. This is isn't a mere showcase of Hitler in his last pitiful attempts at making a final stance, rather, a detailed look at the humanity of a monster forced into a corner with no easy resolution. The entire cast is marvelous, as we see one historical figure after another where no actor is mugging for camera; they simply are their characters. The entire backdrop of war-ridden Berlin and the hopeless bunker of despair lend themselves to the film's overall dower tone. There is no easy resolution for anyone, but more of a realization of the end of one's legacy.

Der Untergang, based on the book "Bis Zum Letzten Stunde" by Traudl Junge, Hitler's own personal assistant, depicts the last ten days of Adolf Hitler inside his bunker in Berlin. Bruno Ganz portrays the dictator in a performance that may be one of the best of the decade. He plays a fallen Hitler, a person that does not recognize reality from fantasy; a person that feels betrayed when his generals do not obey him and that deep down, realizes that the war is lost, but refuses to accept it. Der Untergang is by far the best Hitler bio film to date. And it should be treated just like that: a bio pic, about a fallen dictator refusing to let go all of his power.

fantastic movie, it is a must see movie for sure iit is probably my 4th favourite film ever (behind Millers Crossing , American History X and The Green Mile) In German with English subtitles it tells of Adolf Hitlers last days in the bunkers. The acting in this film shines in every character but Bruno Ganz as Hitler is the best ( and most believable ) version I have ever seen, you can definetly see that he gets into this role and loves every moment. If youv`e never seen this why not?
