The Flamingo Kid (1984)

Brooklyn teenager Jeffrey Willis, thoroughly unhappy with his modest homestead, embraces the other-world aspects of his summer job at the posh Flamingo Club. He spurns his father in favor of the patronage of smooth-talking Phil Brody and is seduced by the ample bikini charms of club member Carla Samson. But thanks to a couple of late-summer hard lessons, the teen eventually realizes that family should always come first.

A working class teen from Brooklyn learns life lessons when he rubs elbows with the rich in his summer job at a beach side resort. Card game at the end has you pulling for Matt Dillon.

Watch this movie and you'll underdstand why Gretzky moved to L.A. Not a half bad film, really.

Saw this movie when it came out in '84 and loved it, and saw it recently and loved it just as much. About a working-class teen (Dillon), his family, and the conflicting desire of the teen to "be something more" with "who he is and where he comes from," so to speak. He becomes a cabana boy at an exclusive, beach-side club for the summer and learns much he never expected to experience. A great coming-of-age story with a lot of heart... (As an aside, if you make "puppy dog noises" while you eat, you might want to see this film.)

The Flamingo Kid is one of those rare films that follows a traditional method of coming-of-age storytelling and then shakes it up by not dealing us mere caricatures and stereotypes.

I don't know if it's because I'm not a fan of Dillon like some other people who reviewed this film, but I didn't think his performance was so great. I just couldn't get into this movie, and found it boring.
