Difret (2014)

Three hours outside of Addis Ababa, a bright 14-year-old girl is on her way home from school when men on horses swoop in and kidnap her. The brave Hirut grabs a rifle and tries to escape, but ends up shooting her would-be husband. In her village the practice of abduction into marriage is common and one of Ethiopia's oldest traditions. Meaza Ashenafi, an empowered and tenacious young lawyer, arrives from the city to represent Hirut and argue that she acted in self defense. Meaza boldly embarks on a collision course between enforcing civil authority and abiding by customary law, risking the ongoing work of her women's legal aid practice to save Hirut's life.

It’s just a shame the film is slightly ragged, with a tendency to preach when there’s more than enough drama to get the point across. Still, it’s an important story, told with commitment.

An earnest and passionate film, based on a true story that is enraging yet inspiring, that is essential viewing for anyone concerned with women's rights.

Sophie Monks Kaufman 12 Mar 2015

Misogyny, tradition, innocence and experience are among the themes given a sophisticated treatment herein.

Difret is painful but profound, skirting the pitfalls of the inspirational biopic for something more grounded and remarkable. Its authenticity extends beyond its central characters, conveying a very real sense of what is at stake.

Difret is an important film dealing with an important theme ... Don't be deterred by the gravitas.
