Detective Story (1951)

Tells the story of one day in the lives of the various people who populate a police detective squad. An embittered cop, Det. Jim McLeod, leads a precinct of characters in their grim daily battle with the city's lowlife. The characters who pass through the precinct over the course of the day include a young petty embezzler, a pair of burglars, and a naive shoplifter.

Wyler não consegue escapar da origem teatral do texto, mas imprime energia ao filme, que também é beneficiado por uma atuação estupenda de Douglas e por ótimas performances de Bendix, Parker e Grant (em sua estréia no cinema).

A day in the life of a NYC plainclothes detective squad. Kirk Douglas heads up a squad who have to deal with a variety of criminals and lowlifes, ranging from petty theives to illegal abortionist doctors. It's a film version of a stage play, so the the film is mostly confined to the police precinct house, though director William Wyler uses the confined space to the film's advantage, buidling tension in this pressure cookeror deviance. The film certainly has some very dated elements to it, but it is nonetheless a gripping and well acted film, particulary by Douglas, Eleanor Parker, William Bendix, and Lee Grant, most of whom were recreating their Broadway roles.

"Detective Story" is amazingly intense and full of emotions in spite of being shot practically in only one scenario in the interior of the precinct. Kirk Douglas gives an outstanding performance, developing a complex character that sees his principles destroyed in a couple of hours with a great intensity.

The most impressive part of this film is the multiple overlapping story's big and small that end up being effected by the main one. Billy wilder is spinning plates and he keeps them all in the air on this one. He also tactfully deals with some delicate subjects (especially for the time) without it feeling over the top of gimmicky. Very clearly based on a play making the downside almost the whole story taking place inside the police station short from one angle and the upside being its filled with well written and clever dialogue. Kurt Douglass is great but a little over the top and times. Ambitiously tackling a whole range of intersecting moral dilemmas the whole time and not one plate touches the ground.

Great early film role for Kirk Douglas who gives one of his best ever performances. It's stage origins are quite noticeable (there are only two real sets to speak of) but that doesnt detract from the various story strands running throughout this excellent little film.
