Detective Story (1951)

Tells the story of one day in the lives of the various people who populate a police detective squad. An embittered cop, Det. Jim McLeod, leads a precinct of characters in their grim daily battle with the city's lowlife. The characters who pass through the precinct over the course of the day include a young petty embezzler, a pair of burglars, and a naive shoplifter.

All involved have done better but it's still a good story. Wyler makes it all so real with almost all of the action taking place in the one room. Douglas was the star but the support should also be applauded.

Though not one of Wyler's best films (it's still a play), the drama is well acted by Kirk Douglas as the tormented and obsessive cop and Lee Grant as a juvenile delinquent.

every time i watch it, it just gets so much better....such a great movie and one of my favorite kirk douglas movies...he's amazing...he should have gotten nominated...love it!!!

Realize this is basically a filmed play going in. That being said, Douglas is awesome, and story has real suspense. . . Only question, did Dr. Schneider perform abortions? Secret baby deliveries? Both? Darn you Motion Picture Code for obscuring this!!

Thanks to Kirk Douglas' memorable performance, this film adaptation of the Broadway play is entertaining and worth a watch, but only for the impressive acting and nothing else.
