Death Takes a Holiday (1934)

After years of questioning why people fear him, Death takes on human form so he can mingle among the mortals and find an answer. However, events soon spiral out of control as he falls in love with the beautiful young Grazia, the only woman not afraid of him. As he falls in love with her, her father sees him for what he is and begs him to return to his duties. Death must decide whether or not to seek his own happiness or sacrifice it so that Grazia may live.

A mite stagy with occasional theatrical performances but still a compelling allegory about the mysteries of life and death.

This movie was the basis for MEET JOE BLACK but its nowhere as good as the original starring Fredric March. Even though this movie is in black and white it's worth seeing just for the fun of comparing the two movie but Death takes a Holiday is a far superior movie.

Filmed in 1934 and starring Frederic March in a role that helped make him the greatest actor of the early talkies. Clocking in at 80 minutes, this version is far superior to "Meet Joe Black," with a concise script, strong cast and haunting effects. Essential.
