I found the film version excellent and very moving (I saw the live show in New York with Ben Platt). I don't know why there is such negativity about this film. It has constant tension as we see Evan make a huge mistake and plunge into a morally ambiguous world where his bad action has many positive outcomes. The songs are fantastic and the music numbers are well-directed. I did think it was a bit too long -- some of the songs seem like asides that didn't add up to anything for me. Overall, if you like movie musicals, this is a good one.

here’s a dissonance between the film’s darker subjects and its seeming desire to offer something uplifting at the end. The coda feels dishonest and makes it as difficult to root for the film’s success as it does for the main character.
