The film offers a poetic political vision of a society falling between the stools of progression and regression, asking whether standing off against the travesties of the antebellum American South is the only way to attain true freedom.

This elegiac, dreamlike drama set on the Sea Islands off South Carolina in 1902 has an iron core of painful history

Wow when critics get it wrong. Shame about this film, such a great subject. Unfortunately you will be subject to a late eighties fest of awkward camera slow mo tricks, a sub Vangelis soundtrack and alarming haircuts complete with long looks into the distance. Some trees may have been smoked during the making of this film. Remake it properly please.

Beautiful, beautiful film. The structure, which attempts to create a sense of place and history by wandering among the people of Gullah Island as some prepare to move north, is partially successful, but also becomes a bit tiresome.

One of the best movies I've seen in a long time, such a incisive, ghostly, haunting view of Black womanhood, what it means to stay in a place of violence, repopulate it with love, what it means to leave that very place.
