Dark Matter (2008)

Liu Xing a brilliant Chinese student, arrives at University and makes the transition into American life with the help of Joanna Silver. Xing joins a cosmology group working to create a model of the origins of the universe. He is obsessed with the study of dark matter and a theory that conflicts with the group's model. When he begins to make breakthroughs of his own, he encounters obstructions.

It is a very good story that I watched in the HK Internation Film Festival. Unluckily that this film cannot be released in most of the areas as the series of shootings happened in US. The story is inspired by a real but sad story about poor Chinese students studied in US but faced a lot of pressure including discrimination and hard competition.

Despite Liu Ye's best efforts, we never really get into his character. Meryl Streep and him have one good effective scene together, but the rest of it's rather pedestrian.

(Mauro Lanari) Inspired by the true story of Gang Lu and by the 1991 University of Iowa shooting, it's so interchangeable with the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting that production had to push back the release over a year. Sociological and cultural psychopathology of US late adolescence, it has not much to say about the narcissistic clash between professor and student, about interethnic conflict and even less about cosmology: dark matter is a simple metaphor of the negative side of human nature, recycled a decade later by Ayache-Vidal in "Les Grands Esprits". Debut of an opera director, it drags the theatrical ballast of "Monkey King" and "Madama Butterfly" (both explicitly shown in the film), adding cinematic incompetence to a melodramatic cut. Streep in "Desperate Housewife" version with a knack for sinology.

For the greatest part of this movie, I was just watching without really following. Of course I'm an ignoramus when it comes to Cosmology (or anything science-related for that matter!), and even though the movie has the most simplistic structure, it's hard to follow because it's not intriguing. As it progresses however, it does obtain a pace and plot that's much vivid. The direction was smartly-handled for someone who's stolen every smart thing about it from other directors. Meryl Streep's participation was what partly saved the movie, since Meryl Streep could even play Spider-man and get an Oscar nomination for it. The movie "comes together" and starts to make sense as a whole at the end. I sympathized with the guy whose only dream was taken away, and as a resulted reacted the way he did. Strip a man off his dreams and you've left him with nothing - and that's what the movie is about for me, and the reason why I liked it.

Thought provoking and tragic. Politics clashes with innovation. In the end it's a downward spiral with the characters but the theory prevails.
