This is a relatively shallow entertainment, but its glossy surfaces certainly are, well, seductive.

I saw a preview for this movie when I watched "A Simple Life." I thought it would be interesting to see this soap opera take place in 1930s Shanghai done by a Chinese film company. But it's heavy on the soap, light on the Shanghai ambiance. Not great, not horrible. Can't recommend it but it wasn't a mistake either.

Definitely worth seeing, but probably only if you haven't seen any of the previous versions. (the 1988 version or Wild Things) I haven't seen either, so It was mostly fresh to me.

It's all just window-dressing: pretty, but substance-free.

Is this the best version of this story ever told? Tough call, but possibly yes. It wouldn't exist without its forebears, there's a couple of moments shamelessly pulled from the Stephen Frears version, the treatment of the Cecile character owes more than a little to Cruel Intentions, and the references to the politics of the new setting feel somewhat tacked on. Nonetheless, it's one of the most sumptuous films ever made in terms of design, and if it leads you in with your eyes, the script does the whole thing justice. Cecelia Cheung absolutely marvels in taking on a role that's been done by Jeanne Moreau, Annette Bening and Glenn Close and making it her own tour de force so that you don't know whether to cheer or run screaming.
