In short, Lee’s new movie — like the great “BlacKkKlansman” (2018) — is a history lesson wrapped in an adventure, the caveat being that history is never done with us, and that we struggle to shrug it off our backs.

If the necessities of the moment mean that Da 5 Bloods won’t get the big theatrical run it deserves, its bold immediacy still hits hard on a smaller screen. Hollywood has made many stirring tales of war heroism, of honor gained and lives lost, and even of the failures of the countries that sent men into battle. But there are shockingly few stories like this one.

The Vietnam War continues as an open wound; and the director Spike Lee knew how to make a story to his liking, which includes the search for a corpse and that of a treasure, bringing up issues such as historical resentment, racism and collateral damage to ecology. The plot takes time but is worth the effort.

Director Lee and the team of writers have created an immersive, violent and sometimes shocking tapestry that plays out like “Deer Hunter” meets “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre,” with a steady undercurrent of subtle and not-so-subtle social and political commentary.

Da 5 Bloods is one of Spike Lee's best films according to me. It's a very good, urgent and serious film. The flashbacks are handled really well, and it has it's emotional and funny moments too. The first half is admittedly extremely slow and overlong. This film has bad editing for the first hour, with it trying to build up the whole story too much. But Spike Lee's direction is very deft and sharp with he having a proper style which you can't help but admire. This film is some of the best cinematography of the year and some good sound effects. Da 5 Bloods makes up for a slow start with a fast-paced, thrilling and action-packed second half with a lot of twists and turns.
