This film is devastating, its entire atmosphere of destruction literally wails right at us, the characters are so like us and the entire obsession with a mythological city, similar to Jodorowsky's Fando y Lis, brings about to life what reality can cost mankind, the reality of power, greed, desire and influence. A highly layered piece of work done in an outrageous camera style with a plot as minimalist as it isincomprehensible not because of obscurity, but because the outside actions nor the actions of the characters were strongly placed out. Definitely one of Kinski's finest.

Great example of artistic restraint...allowing the story to 'tell itself'. Never seen a movie where the location was such a "character". There is no other film like this....except maybe Fitzcaraldo! :-)

another odd and outstanding film from Herzog. most interesting because the film crew and cast really did live for a couple weeks as the film characters do; on a raft with an outhouse which dumped contents straight into the Amazon. this is one of the films made with the camera Herzog stole from the Munich film school. I love Herzog's comments on the audio track telling what typical hollywood would have done with a scene, and what he choose to do instead.

Aguirre, the Wrath of God was loosely inspired by Conrad's Heart of Darkness and went on to inspire Coppola's classic Apocalypse Now. Sandwiched between two fantastic works of art, Aguirre transcends both, pulled along mercilessly by a incredibly intense and frightening performance from Klaus Kinski as the title character. A detailed study of both the human condition and the follies of colonialism.
