"Existential horror"--yeah, that's the Kurosawa.2 methodology. For those who think Kairo is too simple, a tale of hypnotism, memory loss and philosophical exploration far beyond the boundaries of human morality (or, quite possibly, simple humanity). Whatever the hell it is with the Japanese, this has it in spades.

Hypnotizing and possibly one of the creepiest films ever made. Lots of questions are left unanswered and the film is extremely slow but it works at its advantage and becomes a completely unique experience.

The most underrated film in recent memory. Definitely see this movie. Depressing and disturbing but definitely hard to take your eyes off of. This is the movie Serbian Movie wishes it was.

I've read comparisons to Seven and David Lynch and while they're not really off base, they don't do Cure, Seven or Lynch justice. This is beautiful 'quiet horror' that just cements Kiyoshi Kurosawa as THE master of J-Horror, along with Kairo.
