The Gardner family moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard, melts into the earth, and infects both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly colour. To their horror, the family discovers this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches—including them.

Color Out of Space is a delightful surprise. The film’s success is best viewed through the lens of Nicolas Cage’s increasingly deranged performance, which always entertains as it heightens, but never at the expense of servicing the story and elucidating just how dangerous the Color is.

I'm a huge Lovecraft fan I his entire collection, vertigo graphic novel, the films done by Lovecraft Historical Preservation Society. When I heard they where filming an adaption of my favorite Lovecraft story I was exhilarated it was going to be directed by Richard Stanley I was even more so. I was disappointed when it didn't premiere at any theaters in my state I waited till it released on blu-ray a month later. I was shocked that someone mostly translated Lovecraft well more or less on the sliver screen. The film has pacing flaws, crappy cgi, overacting at points (makes logically sense for people going insane) not following the story. This film isn't going to win any awards, it's not going be a film for everyone for Lovecraftian fans this will be a cosmic treat.

Finally, after many years of waiting we got a perfect movie based directly on H.P. Lovecraft. Great atmosphere, very decent performance from Nick Cage and rest of the crew, clearly made by folks who love and understand great master work.

The result is a cheerfully lurid mess that goes goofily off the rails after a slow build, and will offer few surprises for adepts of Lovecraft or of screen schlock.

As the Gardner family descends into madness, with the purple-pink light seemingly taking possession of the house and the grounds, director Stanley and his creative team come up with original and in some cases quite effectively nauseating touches.
