The Gardner family moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard, melts into the earth, and infects both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly colour. To their horror, the family discovers this alien force is gradually mutating every life form that it touches—including them.

I pretty good modern adaptation of the classic novella. The visuals are pretty creative and some of the horror is pretty effective. It takes its time, but its never boring. Nic Cage is awesome and most of the other performances are pretty good. There are some pretty dumb moments, and some unintentionally funny moments, but overall a really solid film.

As things grow more dire and mad for the Gardners, don’t be surprised if you find your eyes starting to water and your head starting to pound. It’s not an altogether pleasant experience, but it’s probably the exact sort of nightmarish, unquantifiable situation that would make H.P. Lovecraft proud.

A dramatic display of bright, flashing neon lights that seemingly appear when not quite necessary, like all the bright flood lights that randomly appear around the house during night time scenes, for example. Just a LITTLE excessive! Nicolas Cage loses his freakin' mind, no surprise there. All this jumbled up with lots of confusion on a mediocre film set, with "reaching for the stars" special effects makes for a VERY generous "5" out of 10! Oh, and we musn't forget the weird, awkward little kid that sucks us into the plot with his "visions" and subpar "warnings"! Like, what is actually HAPPENING here?! What is this film trying to tell us? Interesting yet equally disappointing in it's own special ways.

Reminded me strongly of The Thing from 1982, a little retro. A good mix of suspense, thrill, comedy, mystery and horror. Here and there a few weaknesses in the last third but overall I found it almost too short.

Using shape-shifting as a messy metaphor for sickness and childhood trauma, Stanley and Cage leap so far over the psychological top that they never come back to earth. By the end, my own eyeballs hadn’t changed color, but they must have looked like pinwheels.
