When legendary hunter Bob Rainsford is shipwrecked on the perilous reefs surrounding a mysterious island, he finds himself the guest of the reclusive and eccentric Count Zaroff. While he is very gracious at first, Zaroff eventually forces Rainsford and two other shipwreck survivors, brother and sister Eve and Martin Towbridge, to participate in a sadistic game of cat and mouse in which they are the prey and he is the hunter.

It's kind of cheesy in certain places, but the sets are amazing, which is probably why they used them again for King Kong.

A fine mix of adventure and horror on an island setting you'll recognise as the one in KING KONG. A very slim and simple story: a mad count hunts humans as prey. Surprisingly hasn't dated very much, and benefits from a creepy turn from Leslie Banks as the zealous bad guy and Fay Wray as the scream queen. I found this more graphic and macabre than the much better known DRACULA from the year before.

This is the guilty pleasure to top them all. the acting is over the top, the female interest is useless, and the Russian madman stereotype is alive and well. But it's well put together, the suspense builds up concisely in the count's castle - and resolution is masterfully executed in the jungle. I seem to remember the narrator taking over the count's activities at the end of the short story. He doesn't in the film version - after all, with Fay Wray at your arm, you can be sure your hunting days are safely tucked away.

A perfect adaptation of the excellent short story. My only complaint was the modified final battle between Rainsford and Zaroff, but the last shot that could only be done due to the alteration makes up for it completely.
