Code Unknown (2000)

A series of events unfold like a chain reaction, all stemming from a minor event that brings the film's five characters together. Set in Paris, France, Anne is an actress whose boyfriend Georges photographs the war in Kosovo. Georges' brother, Jean, is looking for the entry code to Georges' apartment. These characters' lives interconnect with a Romanian immigrant and a deaf teacher.

Plotless movie set primarily in Paris about the tangentially related lives of illegal immigrants, legal immigrants and native French.

Mildly frustrating but enriching and profoundly complex film that deals with Haneke's trademark themes including alienation, immigration, ethics etc. Subtitled: Incomplete Tales of Several Journeys. As it is expected with Haneke, it's generally anti-cathartic. Not nearly his best but still better than what everyone else is creating.

This is an engrossing and thought-provoking ensemble film that only shows us the individual fragments of story threads. The points of connection are left to the viewer to flesh out. It reminds one of the recent 'Crash' (which I liked), except Haneke's film is more nuanced and ambiguous, which raises this one up a few notches in my book.

Haneke can let the camera sit in place for minutes without a boring second. Some interesting steadicam work here too.
