Well that was an unexpected delight! One of those rare indie gems that isn't just a "day in the life" tale or quirky for the sake of being different but actually mixes in visual metaphors and creates characters that are believable and justified in their actions. On top of it, the music selection feels modern, appropriate, and effective. Great lil film that achieves what it aims to tell!

Dunn’s work is a far more fantastical feat, one that mixes slow-burn drama with a welcome Cronenbergian sensibility. Oh, and Isabella Rossellini plays a talking hamster. Just try to top that.

Oscar lives with his Dad since his Mom left when he was 8. He hangs out with his friend Gemma, talks to Buffy (voiced by Isabella Rossellini), the hamster he's had since his Mom left, and dreams of attending Joe Blasco's effects school in New York. His relationship with Gemma is a bit flirtatious, but when he meets Wilder at the hardware store he works at, feelings of a completely different nature start stirring in him. This is a pretty fantastic first feature from Newfoundland director Stephen Dunn. It blends melodramatic teen angst with strange fantasy touches in a manner not quite exactly like anyone else. Sometimes it feels like Xavier Dolan, and there are deliberate references to early Cronenberg, but it's not really beholden to its influences. I don't think it completely succeeds ... it builds towards a climax that feels a bit disappointing given what came before it ... but this is an extremely promising debut.

Something about this movie really struck a cord with me and grabbed me from the first few minutes. From the imagination, to really well done depiction of a parent's divorce through an overly artistic child's view, to tackling some scary moments from feeling alone, being mislabeled, and coming of age to a pretty horrific "right in front of you" hate crime. I loved every second, and a bad-ass soundtrack.

There is some beautiful imagery in Closet Monster, but it is weighed down by conventional tropes. As a result, the film never really gains traction and often comes off as tacky making it very difficult to connect and sympathize with the characters. Surprisingly, one of the saving graces of the film is Isabella Rossellini's talking hamster, Buffy. Talking animals are not my thing, but Buffy's advice to Oscar carries just the right amount of bitting contempt and gravitas that somehow works coming from a small rodent. It is through Buffy that Closet Monster manages to briefly escape its cliches.
