Clean and Sober (1988)

Hotshot real estate salesman Daryl has a bad cocaine habit. After embezzling his company's money, he wakes up next to a girl who overdosed. To hide from the police, he checks into a rehabilitation program guaranteeing anonymity. Under the mentorship of counselor Craig, Daryl accepts that he has a substance abuse problem. As he falls in love with fellow patient Charlie, Daryl begins committing to a newly sober life.

maybe it was the subject matter...but too boring to be a good movie...3/5 stars is probably as good as it gets for this drama...

Despite its slightly unbelievable premise, an excellent drama with a fine central performance from Keaton, channeling his manic persona into something a little more bruised and fragile. Good supporting roles for Kathy Baker and Morgan Freeman, too.

I'd seen bits and pieces of this on TV over the years but only just watched it all the way through for the first time last night. Now I remember why I'm a Michael Keaton. This is easily one of his best, maybe the best perfromance of his career. Even though it's been twenty years, the film holds up pretty well. Addiction's a timeless subject, I suppose. The whole cast was spot-on, including a pre-Bab 5 Claudia Christian.

Good film. A dramatic tone to it. Very telling of how ones life, when addicted to drugs, can spiral out of control. I guess you need to be in a somber mood to appreciate this movie.
