Clara's Heart (1988)

David is a teenager whose parents are in a deteriorating marriage after their infant daughter dies. Clara is a chambermaid at a Jamaican resort who's hired to be a housekeeper. She and David develop a close bond, opening his eyes and heart to new experiences, and eventually leading to a disturbing secret in Clara's past.

Whoopi Goldberg here made her first stab at drama since her film debut in The Color Purple, and it's simply appalling. She's mawkishly maternal, and her patois is about as convincing as Lionel Richie's.

I agree w/ another User (love that term!) this is not as great as Blue Velvet or Mulholland but practically nothing is. WAH vacillates --wildly, ok?-- between easy and difficult, sometimes both at the same time. In the 2004 Making Of, Lynch says Laura Dern is the best actress he's worked with, and she is marvelous here. Casting her real-life mother Diane Ladd makes it not just a Sailor & Lula love story but also a mother-daughter picture. Above all, WAH feels restless and sometimes its restlessness is very disturbing. The love story may be feel-good but there's plenty here that isn't. Countless references to the Wizard of Oz create dissonant notes. To quote Rosemary, "This is no dream, it's really happening!" And we viewers have to make up our own mind: About what to make of it all.

At least (John) Waters cares about most of his freaks; for Lynch they're basically exploitation fodder for a puritanical "dark vision of the universe" that seems to come straight out of junior high, complete with giggles.

Wacky in spots but I liked it. Of course then I'm partial to road pictures and I like Nic Cage in almost anything.
