I knew this was an old movie by how young Benicio del Toro looked

It is not surprising that average audience used to Hollywood type happy ending films did not find this film appealing. If you are, however, looking for a drama where all characters are human (in good deeds and in faults) with a really unexpected ending, this film might just be right for you.

Nice classic noir-ish story with with decent performances by Ed Harris, Madeleine Stowe and Benicio Del Toro.

Ace cinematographer John Bailey made his dramatic feature directorial debut with this film (he's previously directed a film version of a Lily Tomlin one woman show. "China Moon" is a throwback to noir films of old, with police detective Ed Harris becoming ensnared in a web of murder and lust by femme fetal Madeleine Stowe. There's not a lot of original to the story and it's pretty slow moving, but the film's noiry style and the strong cast, which includes a young Benicio Del Toro and also Charles Dance, are enough to carry the film. I've never been a big Madeline Stowe fan, so I wonder if I'd have liked this film better if there's been someone else in her role, like Jennifer Connolly or Diane Lane.
