Love the atmosphere, the art direction, the performances. I wish they focussed the script entirely on the circus, or worked harder to keep the narrative connected to the dream/nightmare quality of the circus and "mentalist" circuit. Goes on too long for not enough payoff.

Did not realize this was a remake of a 40s neo-noire film. Of course it is, it's so well done! The circular storytelling and the rich foreshadowing and the gruesome but satisfying practical effects are the highlights for me. Now that I think about it, the psychiatrist lady is a bit too cold and trope-y for me to handle, but honestly, I think some movies should be resurrected faithfully like Nightmare Alley and Westside Story, like Shakespeare.

I enjoyed it. Maybe it wasn't perfect, but it got my attention and the story was interesting for most of the movie. Ending was a bit predictable, but nonetheless entertaining.

All said, Nightmare Alley is something to be admired, rather than treasured. It’s big, classic moviemaking with a moral in the end. And there can be a lot to be said for that.
