There’s no shame in a remake where the re-rendering is genuinely fresh—but del Toro’s take empties its source material of significance, taking us for a gimmicky ride.a, who are too complex for their underwritten characters.

The context, however much of it there is, affects little, and the whole film begins to resemble a fetish object more than an adaptation. In a bad way.

The film’s bursts of violence are genuinely bracing — a face bashed in, a skull shattered, and the signature act of animal mutilation performed by a carnival geek, a figure of abject degradation who haunts the film’s ill-fated protagonist. But for a pulpy tale of addiction and desperate lives on the fringes, Nightmare Alley is otherwise depressingly short on actual darkness and discomfort.

Nightmare Alley is one of the most thought provoking films I've ever seen. It grabs your attention with stunning circus visuals in the first act, and never lets up with beautiful cinematography prevalent throughout. The powerhouse performances of Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett keep you on your toes, even during the second act, when the plot slows down significantly. Finally, the third act is an absolute thrill ride with a clever ending that will leave you reconsidering everything you've seen. This fantastic conclusion is the icing on the cake for another terrific addition to Guillermo del Toro's body of work.

Bloated at nearly 140 minutes with Cooper clearly miscast in the lead, it struggles to maintain urgency. Dreary and overly saturated with a CGI patina, this new take on Nightmare Alley adds more gore and f-bombs to the source material but ultimately remains emotionally inert and unclear exactly what it wants to say about these characters and the world they inhabit.
