If it plays in any theaters beyond New York and Los Angeles, that'll probably come as a surprise to its distributor (the estimable Lorber Films). None of that diminishes the power and intensity of this claustrophobic mini-masterpiece of the Japanese antiwar tradition, which blends a B-movie aesthetic, brilliant use of montage and documentary elements and a scathing critique of nationalism and militarism.

Tough drama about a faithful wife caring for her quadruple amputee husband in WWII era Japan makes its point a little too early. Under the surface of his heroism lies a dark secret, and his wife's struggle to care for him becomes an epic battle of will. It's a strong concept, but a repetitive and oppressive film. Well acted but lacking emotional cohesion.

Caterpillar is brilliant but tough to look at; Wakamatsu isn't pulling any punches as he delivers his message. It's the Feel-Bad Movie of the Week, really.

Plot description is misleading. Story is political, but is mainly about a woman who cares for her invalid soldier husband who lost his arms & legs and cant speak. Very sad & well-acted by Shinobu Terajima. (Caution: graphic creepy sex scenes.)
