After years of separation, Irena Gallier and her minister brother, Paul, reunite in New Orleans. When zoologists capture a wild panther, Irena is drawn to the cat – and zoo curator Oliver to her. Soon, Paul will have to reveal the family secret: that when sexually aroused, they revert into predatory jungle cats.

Paul Schrader's erotic remake of Jacques Tourneur's 1942 classic about an innocent young woman (Nastassia Kinski) who is subject to feline metamorphosis when aroused. This stylish, bloody and sexy offering contains the hit David Bowie theme song, "Putting Out Fire". Good music score by Giorgio Moroder. Co-starring Malcolm McDowell as the similarly cursed brother pushing for incest.

This is not a great movie. But you won't soon forget it. It has some of the more explicit sex scenes you'll see in a movie from this period, including one that, well, let's just say it's amazing what people will do for those they love. And it is decidedly creepy when it wants to be, which is more than you can say about of lot of movies. Good performances, especially by Kinski, who had to be a pretty brave soul to sign up for this after reading the screenplay -- especially the last four pages. And David Bowie's music is used to great effect in most scenes.

Paul Schrader's experimental remake of the classic old movie remains a potent movie. Filled with erotic-intensity, paranoia and impossibly cool shade - "Cat People" is a tawdry, encaging , sexy, depraved, twisted and fun movie. Natassja Kinski brings her alluring presence which effortlessly blends with Malcom McDowell's sinister performance. The cinematic metaphors are a bit heavy-handed, but still effective. Offering a glimpse at a New Orleans long gone, "Cat People" is great movie. The throbbingly incessant Giorgio Moroder score does not seem so much dated as appropriate within the context of this seething seedy movie. As David Bowie croons, this movie is "putting out fire with gasoline." ...and it is much fun to watch.

Aside from it being a great movie with a great theme song, I was interested in that it took place in New Orleans, where I lived at the time. Also, the story of the cat people was almost identical to the African Voodoo myth of Agasou, the legendary founder of the Fon people.
